Who We Are

1. Background:

Lutheran Campus Ministry is a mission of the Saskatchewan synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. In 1959, Rev. Don and Winnifred Voigts established a unique ministry to students attending the University of Saskatchewan. They sold their car and bought a house at 314 Cumberland Avenue that became a "home away from home" for students who gathered every evening at 9:30 p.m. for worship and fellowship. In 1975, the ministry moved to the corner of College Drive and Wiggins avenue where it is currently located. The Campus Centre is still a "home away from home" for students through the spirit of community that is created, weekly worship, community suppers, discussion groups, programs, and activities are rooted in the Lutheran tradition but open to all.

2. Mission:

The mission of the Lutheran Campus Ministry is to proclaim and witness, through word and sacrament, to the saving grace of God in the academic community, among students, faculty and staff.

3. Ecumenical and Interfaith Relationships

Lutheran Campus Ministry seeks, where possible, to provide a Christian presence on campus in cooperation with other denominations who share similar purposes and goals. The Chaplain is a member of the University of Saskatchewan Campus Ministry Team.

The term "global village" accurately describes the university campuses of today. Campuses are populated with people from across the country and around the world. They are a microcosm of the multi-cultural and multi-faith dimension of our country. Being able to relate to a wide variety of religious assumptions and expressions is a requirement, not only of our Christian love and respect for all of God's creation, but also of the university where we minister. As we work with people of other faith traditions, Lutheran Campus Ministry is in a prophetic position of providing educational opportunities for learning how to live in a pluralistic world, demonstrating not only how to tolerate the differences in God's creation, but how to celebrate them.
